Diesel Won't Start? Run This Field Checklist First

A no-start diesel doesn't always mean a big repair. Before you assume the worst, here are the things worth checking — and the signs that mean it's time to call.

Quick Checks Before You Panic

• Batteries & connections. Diesels crank hard and hate weak batteries. Check for corroded or loose terminals and confirm the batteries are actually holding charge.
• Fuel. Confirm you've actually got fuel and that it's reaching the engine. Air in the fuel system or a clogged filter is a common no-start cause.
• Glow plugs / intake heater. In cold conditions, a failed cold-start aid will stop a healthy engine from firing.
• Fuel filter. A plugged filter starves the engine — a frequent and cheap culprit.
• Codes. If the dash is throwing codes, that's your fastest clue. A real diagnostic scan reads what the generic checks can't.

Signs You Need a Mechanic Now

• Metallic knocking or grinding when it does crank
• White or excessive smoke with a rough or no start
• Coolant or oil where it shouldn't be
• Repeated no-starts after the basic checks come back fine
